Happy New Year

Ahhhh…..Christmas. Last year I spent most of the holiday lounging around because my midwife had put me on bedrest. This year I ran around like a lunatic. The frantic pace let up a little after Christmas but not entirely.

This morning I drove my mother and sister to the airport. Once I got home I took it easy until dinner time and now, at 7:30PM, I feel like going to bed.

A couple of amusing things.

Coco has really started to rebel against car trips. Once buckled into her carseat, she cries and cries. Layr, brillant husband and father that he is, figured out that singing songs soothed her. The songs can’t have words, just la las. Several times over that past couple weeks, different members of my family have all sung Christmas carols to Coco while riding somewhere. Looking foolish doesn’t seem to concern anyone. It made me laugh several times at the way we all heartily belted out Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer or Jingle Bells in la las. Coco signs along, too.

The other very amusing thing that has nothing to do with the holidays happened to Layr this morning at the dentist. He was having a crown put in and had told me a couple times about this teeny tiny screwdriver/torque wrench device the dentist used. Well, Layr was peacefully relaxing in the chair – one of the few places lately he feels that he can really relax, he told me – as Dr Kraft got to work. Suddenly he jolted up, coughing, because of something in his throat. Dr Kraft looked stunned as they both realized that the teeny tiny screwdriver had been swallowed.

Now, that’s funny.

Delight

Tonight Coco bit me with her two new shiny top teeth (the teeth I’ve been attempting to photograph for several days). I said loudly, “ouch.” At first she looked a bit surprised, but only for a moment. Then, she laughed. What was unique about this is that Coco is not a laugher. It’s actually a rarity. And though it happened once before, she does not, as a rule, laugh when she’s misbehaved.

When she does laugh, I keep doing whatever it was that made her start in the first place because her laughter is delightful. There we were, me laughing at her laughing at me. To keep it going I tickled her neck with my fingertips. The way she raised her shoulders as I tickled made me laugh harder which in turn made her laugh even harder.

After several minutes of this hilarity, we grew tired of laughing and stopped. Until she bit me again.
